Avengers: Solo #5

Extremely wordy post below~

I’ve been picking this series up because it featured two of my favorite Academy students. And I’m on/off about liking this short story, moreso I don’t. Striker is written fine himself, but Jeanne, nope. I felt in issue #2, that Jeanne was ooc, like she was making jokes. That’s something she does not do, Jeanne says a lot of funny stuff but what makes it hilarious, is that she’s serious when she’s talks. ie “I’ve constructed flashcards” “A 16yr in a 30yr old body, I think I’m beginning to understand irony” So yeah, I wasn’t a fan early on of Jim McCann writing her.

I did not like this ending at all. So Jeanne after defeating Alkhema, stole her CPU and cut the feeds so it wouldn’t be seen. But should’ve done it a few seconds earlier, because Hank still finds out, but doesn’t tell her. And here at the end, Jeanne is looking like she’s constructing how to rebuild her or just a robot. Let’s just hope it’s not a mass murdering one, Hank’s her teacher, she should know better. But I’m just gonna take this act, simply relating to her comment back in AA13 to Reptil “But I’m learning so much. Things Dr. Pym and the others won’t teach us. Things we may need to survive. ” Maybe she thinks she’ll need a robot or something. I love that Jeanne does use everything to her advantage and she’s not afraid to do so. And I don’t think for a moment she’s gonna use any of her knowledge for evil purposes. But I feel this ending alludes to that. And that’s not her.

My biggest problem, is that Striker & Finesse were being tested. But really for what? If they would defeat Alkhema correctly, work together well, or loot the place after the battle?! I don’t like they were given a test for whatever purposes and it was just them who were being tested. Especially when Striker, Finesse (and Hazmat) are considered moreso the bad seeds of the Academy kids. But Avengers: Solo takes place between AA20 & 21, which is right after Fear Itself. And by then, they proved themselves heroes and good guys. Especially Jeanne, with her almost valiant sacrifice. And her heroic nature only has grown even more since the latest issue of Avengers Academy. But this makes it seem that the teachers with testing them weren’t any closer to giving the kids some credit, y’know that they aren’t bad and thinking better of them.

But honestly, although i wrote so much. I wouldn’t give too much to this story. With all 5 issues together, it’s about a total of 25 pages, that I also don’t think most read. I don’t really expect to see anything about it again or have this play out. Especially that Jeanne is mainly under Christos Gage’s pen and she’s heading in a great direction with him right her. This story was just bothering me.

And on a different note, Idk if it was Jim McCann or Karl Kesel who decided to include Julie in the panel with Striker & Mettle, but she shouldn’t be there, as she didn’t meet them until AA21.

- The Academy backup story in Avengers: Solo #1-5 takes place between Avengers Academy #20 & 21

- The AA story is unrelated to the main Hawkeye one by Jen Van Meter happening in that book.

- Will feature just two of the students, Finesse and Striker (with Jeanne in this, it’s a must buy for me!) along with Hank and Tigra.

- Previews if you haven’t seen: Pages 1-2, 03

- Written by Jim McCann & art by Clayton Henry

—————————————

BF: What’s the format of the series? Is it two self contained tales each issue?
JEN VAN METER: Yeah. My story and Jim’s are independent of one another. Double the fun!

BF: Jim, you’ve written Hawkeye before. Now you’re focusing on Hank Pym. Which Avenger is next?

JIM MCCANN: It depends on who they let me write next! I’d love to return to Mockingbird. The Avengers are my favorite team, so really writing any of them would be fantastic!

BF: I take it you have a soft spot for Clint, seeing as you’ve tackled him before. Will he show up in your story, or is it solely focused on Hank Pym?

MCCANN: Clint’s hands are full in the main story of Avengers Solo. I’m playing with Hank Pym and two of the Avengers Academy, as well as Tigra. However, some other very familiar faces will show up in a surprising - and deadly - way.

BF: Is Hank a natural leader?

MCCANN: I’d say he’s learning to be a natural teacher. I think he COULD be a leader, but he’s more a mentor right now.

BF: Have you been reading Avengers Academy and how does your story fit into the ongoing series?

MCCANN: I have been reading (and loving) Avengers Academy. Christos Gage and I have very similar tastes and sensibilities, to the point where I absolutely envy his book. We spoke a lot before I started writing this story and it fits directly into their continuity - between issues 20 and 21.

AVENGERS SOLO #1 - UNLETTERED PREVIEWS

Out October 19!

Written by Jen Van Meter, Jim McCann
Art by Roger Robinson, Clayton Henry

A body lies on the steps of Avengers headquarters and Earth’s Mightiest are taking the blame for it! It’s up to Hawkeye to solve this seemingly simple murder mystery, but as the Arrowed Avenger digs deeper – he’ll find himself in a gruesome conspiracy! Can Hawkeye get to the bottom of this before it’s too late? Will the Avengers be the only ones to blame for the death of an innocent? That’s what someone wants and if all goes according to plan, it just may happen! With a special backup story featuring Hank Pym and Avengers Academy by writer Jim McCann & artist Clayton Henry.

Since it says the Avengers Academy part is a backup story, I guess this means it’s connected to Hawkeye’s main story, which I was previously wondering. And Academy is gonna have a murder mystery of their own come #21, but who knows if that’s connected or separate to this as well.
